RESISTING IN THE CITY OF TRENCHERS

Statement published by Alessandro Berti on Facebook on august 2017, 14th, a few days after the  eviction of Labas Social Centre.

The issue of the clearing out of the LABAS social centre in Bologna is important for many reasons and one of them is the place where this experience has started and developed over the years: via Orfeo, in the heart of a neighbourhood in the very centre of Bologna, perhaps the finest area in the city centre. What kind of city-centre do we want? In Casavuota, my little art-atelier in via San Felice, another street in the centre, I pay a rent. It's not a critical note: it is an artist's atelier, it is normal to pay. The question could be another: why there seems to be no alternative between occupying (places suitable for your project that the owners would never lease to you) or paying (less suitable places you can afford)? Of course there could be other options: the institutional anteroom, the sadness of the Libere Forme Associative (the list of associations of Bologna) and their little rooms, but here we should talk about the agreements, the criteria and the peculiar kind of relationships behind all this, the burocratic greyness and little mafias, the transformation of artists into officials etc. but let go for the moment and just say: to pay or to occupy are the two methods that enable a local cultural venture to be faster and more informal than an average one in Italy, let's say: more european-like. So, since I'm too much a loner to put on a group of squatters, I pay a rent to promote culture in a street invaded by little, chic fashion shops (exceptions: the Women Bookshop, the Bus Drivers Circle, The Fortitudo Gym). Some humanity's left, though, between a shopwindow and the other: the historic homeless Stefano, reading La Repubblica, sitting all day long on the pavement under the Portico, like a Buddha the minister Minniti was not able to chase away yet; some ancient drug-addicts; some saviours of cats and birds, spreading breadcrumbs, opening cans etc. All figures that discredit the street in esthetical terms and distinguish it in human terms. And then there are my neighboroughs, properly: eight african refugees and a lawyer's office. Such a patchwork, one must admit, in a little condo, just three flats (an art atelier, three middle-class young lawyers, eight just-got-off-the-boat black guys), well, it's something only catholics could attempt, probably forced by this new Bishop, anyway: the whole property is owned by the local Church. About the street, again: some grocery shops are going to shut down, some others are resisting, all these shops sell artisanal products from the south of Italy at a normal price, yet they are in crisis. Meanwhile a lot of little Coop, Pam and Carrefour are opening everywhere in the centre: little supermarkets for tourists. And for something more radical-chic (that is: with some taste, though less and less, at a decent price, though less and less) there is Eataly, Mercato di Mezzo and Mercato delle Erbe.
Here it is: a map of food consumption already typical of a tourist town, though in neo-cooperative sauce. I think we should fight for a different future for Bologna. The defense, and rebirth, of places like Labas or XM24 (alternative, informal, convivial, politically spurious spaces) is part of this battle against the touristic setup to come.

To have an idea of what living in a tourist town means, here's a preview of the new book by Marco D'Eramo: https://www.che-fare.com/marco-deramo-la-citta-turistica-c…/

Mai successo in vent'anni. Casavuota, città vuota: siamo all'inizio, bisogna ripartire dai fondamentali.
Resisterò col mio teatro morale? Resisterò a dire cose importanti senza fare la predica? O mi aspetta una vecchiaia dadaista? Allora, dicevamo: i fondamentali.
Vi aspettiamo a Casavuota, via San Felice 39, Bologna, 21-22 aprile 2017 ore 21.

CASAVUOTA. A THEATRE STUDIO IN BOLOGNA

Who's the crazy guy opening a theatre, a private, cultural, non-commercial place, today, and here? Casavuota is not a theatre, anyway. It's a house. Empty, almost. In the centre of Bologna. With a living room big enough to make performances in it. For a little audience. And a kitchen, as in every house. We don't really combine dinner and theatre: dinner would win, belly always wins here. No. Just this: after the performance, for those who want to, we can stop here together some time, without going all over the Bolonese Entertainment Factory in search of a place quiet enough to allow a little talk. Those who come are invited to bring something to share, to eat or drink. But why have I started to talk about food, me too? Let's talk about theatre. So: I couldn't find a place to rehearse anymore, not in town. Better: I could but there were always more ifs and buts. I've always been kind of spoiled, you know, I don't like ifs and buts. Then they started to ask me for money, never happened in twenty years. So I decided to take a place myself, paid by me, where to rehearse my performances and invite who I want to invite. Ahi ahi: you've endend up resigning your own garden. No. No business here, no charming house, no vague places like Berlin or Kobenhaven, no radical chic circles, no vintage, nothing like that. Just an uncool house in an overrated area of an overrated city. Casavuota: empty house, empty city. We're at the beginning, we've to re-start from the basics. Will I resist? I mean, with my kind of moral theatre? Or a dadaist senility is awaiting? Anyway, we were saying: the basics. First of all an invitation: get out of your houses, for God's sake, get out of'em! Not just to go shopping during Tdays, get out and enter other houses, see the underworld, the sadness of the houses, of kitchens: is there still some slice of reality left, with its taste, its poor ugliness, here too? Are the poor condemned to hide? We need to invent some strategies to remain, or come back, or get for the first time, to a rougher contact with things. The little Casavuota condo, via San Felice 39, Bologna, is so composed: on the first floor a law office with very easygoing, a little dorky lawyers, and beside them eight young refugees from Gambia and Nigeria, on the second and last floor our theatre-studio. Beside the condo: the old roofless San Martino and Felice Church, a corner of Palermo in the neat Bologna, one of the few ancient places in town not yet transformed in superstore. Future events in Casavuota: to celebrate the Liberation of Bologna from Nazi-fascism (1945, april 21st), we present the performance UN CRISTIANO by A. Berti and the books EDUCATI ALLA GUERRA by G. Gabrielli (Ombre corte 2016) and LA CHIESA E LA MEMORIA DIVISA DEL '900 BY A. Deoriti (Pendragon 2016), 2017, april 21st and 22nd, h 21.
